Winter Losses

11-Feb-07

The weather is a bit warmer lately.  The thermometer read 35° F yesterday, so I fed each hive half a quart of syrup.  (Only half a jar so the glass wouldn’t break if the syrup froze in the night.)
Since the sun was shining and there was no wind, I checked each hive by opening the [...]

A Minor Rant

22-Jan-07

I know this isn’t a beekeeping topic, but…
Those of you who run websites know that there are some costs involved, hence the need for some advertising.  One of my ads was for a web host and it was run through ClickBank.  Eight people I know asked me for hosting recommendations in the last year.  I [...]

Lower Temps

17-Jan-07

The temperature began to fall yesterday.  The thermometer read 22° F at sundown.  Worried, I went out after dark to make sure my entrance reducers were still in place.  Several were significantly out of place, allowing much more cold air in, so I’m glad I checked.  But as I went from hive to hive adjusting [...]

Another Good One

09-Jan-07

Here’s one of even more bees at the entrance.  Not in a square, though.  Stupid bees.

Photos Requested

09-Jan-07

A reader asked whether we had any photos of many bees at the hive entrance.  Here’s one:

I call this photo “A Perfect Square.”  My bees know geometry.

An Unexpected Task

08-Jan-07

Daytime highs in the upper 60s - not what you would expect for early January.  The hives are quite active, with foragers out in full force, but there is nothing for them to collect!  Fortunately, the hives are consuming as much syrup as I can feed them.  The entrance feeder jar, empty in this photo [...]
